St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church
140 North Beaver Street , York, PA 17401
On Sunday, June 27 the Episcopal Church of St. John the Baptist
in York, PA will celebrate their Patronal Feast with Holy Eucharist celebrated
at 7:30 and 10 AM by the Rev. Canon David W. Lovelace. Following the 10
o'clock service the parish members and their friends are invited to a
"pig pickin" picnic on the front lawn. Visitors are encouraged
to join us for this special service and the picnic.
Members of the Episcopal Church of St. John the Baptist in
York, PA have inaugurated a new guild - the Guild of St. Zita. Zita
lived in Italy in the 1200's and was canonized for her unselfish,
compassionate good works. She was known for encouraging others to follow
her example performing charitable deeds and building community. St.
Zita's Guild will engage in a variety of ministries to support the life of the
parish community and extend the gift of hospitality.
On Sunday, July 4, the Episcopal Church invites parishioners
and the community to an observance of our national holiday. The
7:30 AM and 10 AM service on July 4 will be from the 1789 Book of Common
Prayer according to the use of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United
States of America. Following each service those attending will be
invited to ring the York Liberty Bell located at the back of the church
building.
The bell was a gift to the parish in 1774 by the Society for
the Propagation of the Gospel. There was no belfry in the church
building at the time so the bell was placed on the pavement in the town
square. When news of the signing of the Declaration of Independence
reached York, the bell was hoisted to the cupola of the Court House to proclaim
the good news. During the time the Continental Congress met in York
the bell called the members into session.
